Jamie Hewlett is an English designer and comic book artist. He is most widely known for his work as the co - creator of the virtual band: Gorillaz.
Hewlett is also the co creator of the popular cult comic book: Tank Girl.

Hewlett was born on April 3 1968 and was raised in Horsham, West Sussex where he attended Tanbridge House School. It was here where he developed his artistic skills from an early age. Hewlett contributed artwork to a road safety campaign that ended up runner up in a national television competition. Hewlett then studied at Northbrook Art College in Worthing where he set up his own fanzine, "Atomtan". This was a nonprofessional and nonofficial publication produced by fans.

After Hewlett left college, He was chosen to create comics for a new magazine called Deadline. It was here that he began working with artist Alan Martin on a new comic strip called "Tank Girl" This was an anarchic comic strip about a teenage punk girl which soon became Deadline's most popular comic.By 1992, Hewlett had become a major creator in the comics industry, and one of the few to break into mainstream media.

In 1996, Hewlett moved into an apartment with Damon Albarn - the lead singer of the band "Blur". The pair came up with the idea of creating a virtual band called Gorillaz. The idea was to for Albarn to create the music and Hewlett's job was to create the character design. The reason they created the band was to prove that popular culture was greatly saturated and that anyone, even cartoon characters could make it mainstream. The first Gorillaz single was released in 2000 followed by the first album,"Gorrilaz" in 2001. In 2005, their second full studio album, "Demon Days" was released. The third studio album "Plastic Beach" was released on March 3rd 2010. Hewlett expressed annoyance at having to draw the band members again: "I'm so fucking bored of drawing those characters. But then we had a moment where we had a new angle on it... I'm gonna adapt them". In a later interview Hewlett said: "they'll be the same characters, but a little bit older and told in a different way" Gorillaz remains Hewlett's main project for the foreseeable future
