The Concept of Subculture

"The meaning of subculture is, then, always in dispute, and style is the area in which both the opposing definitions clash with the most dramatic force" Dick Hebdige. Subculture : The meaning of style

A subculture is defined a social group within a national culture that has distinctive patterns of behavior and beliefs. The predominant explanation for the formation of subcultures lies within the theory that they form as a collective opposition to the dominant society. The core ideology behind subculture is to differeciate themselves from the dominant culture. The group are functionally unified by a single belief the given culture is based on. The concept of subculture often focuses on the differences and awareness in style, whether it be music, fashion or other areas. In Dick Hebdiges 1979 book, "The meaning of style" he states that subculture is a subversion to normalcy and that subcultures bring together like minded individuals who feel neglected by societal standards or other external influences, and thus then allow themselves to develop a sense of identity. They have a distorted and somewhat ambivalent view on general society and more often than not have distinctive mannerisms, activities and interest that may not serve a conform to main stream society.

Subcultures invert the usual standards of society to be considered as distinct from the norm. Subcultures are defined by man different connatations including status, style, ethnicity or other factors. The negative connations that arise from the idea of subculture is its opposition to societal values and its non conforming so social class. Subcultures, with specific emphasis on the studies into youth subculture, generally are considered degenerative and deviant. Subcultures serve as a contradiction to conventional style of society.
